Intro: The ultimate question: “Whose Son is He?” ( Matt 22:41-42)

          A.      Faith comes from what is written (John 20:30-31)

                   1.       God is omniscient (Num 23:19)

                   2.       What God plans,  He accomplishes (Isa 46:9-10)

                   3.       The Messiah would be known by prophesy (Isa 48:3,5)

          B.       Fulfilled prophecy:          evidence of Jesus the Messiah (Rom 1:1-3, Luke 24:27)

                   1.       The method Jesus used (Luke 24:32)

                   2.       The favored method of teaching about Jesus (Acts 3:18; 10:43; 17:2; 1 Cor 15:3 – 4)

 

I.       Fulfilled prophecies concerning His birth (Gen 3:15; Gal 4:4; Isa 7:14; Matt 1:18, 23, 25, Luke 1:30-35)

        A.        Fulfilled prophecies concerning His lineage

                   1.       Son of God ( Ps 2:7; Matt 3:17)

                   2.       Seed of Abraham (Gen 12:2-3; Matt 1:1)

                   3.       Son of Isaac (Gen 21:12; Luke 3:23,34)

                   4.       Son of Jacob (Gen 24:17; Luke 3:23,34)

III.     Fulfilled prophecies from one day in the life of Jesus

                   1.       Betrayed by a friend (Psa 41:9; Matt 10:4)

                   2.       Sold for thirty pieces of silver (Zech 11:12; Matt 26:15)

                   3.      Money thrown down in God’s House (Zech 11:13; Matt 27:5)  

                   4.       Price of potters field (Zech 11:13; Matt 27:7 )

                   5.       Forsaken by His disciples (Zech 13:7; Mark 14:50)

                   6.       Accused by false witnesses (Psalm 35:11; Matt 26:59-60)

                   7.       Silent before His accusers (Isaiah 53:7; Matt 27:12)

                   8.       He was wounded and bruised (Isaiah 53:5; Matt 27:26)

                   9.       He was smitten and spat upon (Isaiah 50:6;  Micah 5:1;Matt 26:67;  Luke 22:63)

                   10.     He was mocked (Psalm 22:7-8; Matt 27:29, 41-43)

                   11.     He fell under the weight of carrying His own cross (Psalm 109:24,25; Matt 27:31-32;  John 19:17; Luke 23:26)

                   12.     His hands and feet were pierced (Psalm 22:16;  Zech 12:10; Luke 23:33;  John 20:25

                   13.     Crucified with common criminals ( Isaiah 53:12; Matt 27:38; Mark 15:27-28)

                   17.     Friends stood afar off (Psalm 38:11; Luke 23:39;  Matt 27:55; Mark 15:40)

                   18.     The people shook their heads prophesied ( Psalm 109:25; 22:7; Matt 27:39)

                   19.     He was stared upon (Psalm 22:17 ; Luke 23:35)

                   20.     His garments were parted and they cast lots for them (Psalm 22:18; John 19: 23,24)

                   21.     He suffered thirst ( Psalm 69:21; John 19: 28)

                   22.     Gall and vinegar to drink (Psalm 69:21; John 19: 28,29 ; Matt 27:34)

                   23.     He cried out about being forsaken (Psalm 22:1; Matt 27:46)

                   24.     He committed Himself to God prophesied (Psalm 31:5; Luke 23:46)

                   25.     His bones were not broken (Psalm 34:20; John 19:33)

                   26.     His heart was broken (Psalm 22:14; John 19:34)

                   27.     His side was pierced (Zech 12:10; John 19:34)

                   28.     Darkness came over all the land (Amos 8:9; Matt 27:45)

                   29.     Buried in a rich man’s tomb (Isa 53:9; Matt 27:57-60)

 

IV.     Fulfilled prophecies from one day in the life of Jesus       

          A.     29 Specific prophecies fulfilled!

                   1.       Consider the diversity of the prophets.

                   2.       The diversity of the historians

         B.      The mathematical odds of fulfillment in one man based on random (50/50) chance: (1/2)^29 = One in 536,870,000!

 

V.      What are the odds of fulfilling 440 lifetime prophesies? (1/2)^440

 

VI.     Faith in the prophecies of His resurrection (Psalm 16:10; Acts 2:30-32) 

 

Acts 1:3    To These He also presented Himself alive, after His suffering, by many convincing proofs, appearing to them over a period of forty days, and speaking of the things concerning the kingdom of God.

 

VII.    Faith in the prophecies of His ascension (Psalm 68:18; Acts 1:9)

 

VIII.   Faith in the prophecies of His reign at God’s right hand (Psalm 110:1;  Heb 1:3)

 

IX.     The last prophecy: His second coming (Acts 1:9-11; 1 Thess 4:16-18; 2 Thess 1:7-10)

 

Acts 1:11   and they also said, "Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into the sky? This Jesus, who has been taken up from you into heaven, will come in just the same way as you have watched Him go into heaven.”
